Shot man 'was stripped and bound' Name released of shooting victim
(19 minutes later)
A man found shot dead on the outskirts of Londonderry was stripped and had his hands tied, Foyle assembly member Martina Anderson has said. The name of a man found shot dead on the outskirts of Londonderry has been released by police.
His body was discovered on Braehead Road, near the Irish border on the road to Letterkenny, at about 2230 GMT on Wednesday. Police are at the scene. Ciaran Doherty, 31, was from the Brandywell area in the city. He and was due to get married in three months and had a two-year-old daughter.
Ms Anderson said the attack bore the hallmarks of a paramilitary-style killing. His body was discovered, stripped and bound on Braehead Road, near the Irish border at about 2230 GMT on Wednesday.
"Let those who are responsible come out and tell us," the MLA added. Police said Mr Doherty was last seen as he left home at about 2000 GMT on Wednesday night.
"The vast majority of people in Derry would absolutely condemn what has happened here in their city." At a press conference the police said they were unable to confirm whether he had then been abducted, or whether he had been shot at the spot where his body was later discovered.
"There is no place for this in our society. Detective Chief Inspector Ian Harrison said the people who murdered Mr Doherty were criminals, who had destroyed not only the victim's life, but those of his partner and his young family as well.
"We all want the gun taken out of our community, we are absolutely disgusted with what happened last night, how dare they." Mr Harrison confirmed that Ciaran Doherty was "known to police" but would not give any more details.
A forensic examination of the scene, which has been cordoned off, is under way. Mr Doherty's murder has been condemned by local politicians and community leaders.
Detectives have appealed for help to identify the murdered man, described as 6ft, with receding brown hair and aged 35 to 40. Church of Ireland Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, the Rev Ken Good, said people in the town are in shock..
Dissident republicans "Right across the community, there is a clear sense of revulsion that another brutal murder has been carried out in this city.
Ms Anderson said the attack bore the hallmarks of a paramilitary-style killing "The horrific manner in which the victim's body was left at the roadside by those who perpetrated the crime is a further cause for shock and outrage," he said.
A priest who visited the area where the body was discovered, Father Stephen McLaughlin, said it was a "chilling" sight. "One of the signs that a community has moved beyond such murderous acts as this is a willingness to ensure that those responsible for such a crime cannot remain hidden but must be brought to justice.
"A man was murdered on a quiet country road in the darkness of night. "It is vital that the PSNI are provided with any information which will make possible the arrest of those who are guilty of this murder."
"It's something that's hard to take in, there's just a feeling of complete revulsion, you feel sick to the pit of your stomach," he said. A forensic examination of the scene, which has been cordoned off, is continuing.
Politicians and community leaders have voiced concerns that dissident republicans may be responsible for the attack, but their involvement has yet to be confirmed.
SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan said: "I totally and absolutely condemn this brutal and crude murder, which is a throwback to the very worst of our past."
DUP East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell said the killing bears a "remarkable similarity" to murders by the Provisional IRA and others during the troubles.
"Whilst there is much talk of stopping those responsible from dragging us back to the past, this can only be the case if the community gives whatever information they have to the police.
"It is only full cooperation between the police and the community that can bring the perpetrators before the courts," the MP added.
"I extend my sympathy to the family involved and those who have lost a friend and loved one."
