Some cutting words from shadow chancellor George Osborne about the immediate aftermath of the first TV debate. He says: "The 'spin room' after the debate told you everything you need to know about Labour's negative campaign of fear. Realising that their candidate had lost, a trio of Peter Mandelson, Alastair Campbell and Unite Union fixer Charlie Whelan fanned out across the room like an ageing rock group getting together for an ill-advised come back tour. Not so much Spinal Tap as Spin on Tap. It wasn't pretty." Two opinion polls are in, suggesting an improvement in Lib Dem fortunes. ComRes, for the Sunday Mirror and Independent on Sunday, indicates the Lib Dems have overtaken Labour. It puts the Tories on 31%, the Lib Dems on 29% and Labour on 27%, with others on 13%. It spoke to 1,006 GB adults on Friday and Saturday. Meanwhile, an ICM poll for the Telegraph, carried out mainly before last Thursday's prime ministerial TV debate, puts the Lib Dems on 27%, with Labour on 29% and the Conservatives on 34%. ICM spoke to 1,033 adults by telephone on Wednesday and Thursday.
