Public mood can turn against the government very quickly in times of national crisis, says the BBC's Reeta Chakrabarti. Labour will also hope the current situation helps convince voters that Gordon Brown is the sort of steady, proven leader they should stick with. Conservative plans to encourage marriage will have little impact on the development of children whose parents already live together. That's the conclusion of think tank the Institute for Fiscal Studies. It says data on 10,000 children shows married parents tended to be wealthier, better educated and in more stable relationships in the first place - the fact that they're married has little benefit on youngsters over and above those existing positive factors.
