  1. 1638: Here's an interesting admission from one of the party leaders. David Cameron has said the Conservatives "probably deserved" to lose the 1997 election. Campaigning in Burton-on-Trent, he defended the existing first-past-the-post electoral system, saying it allowed the public to get rid of governments they had lost confidence in. Referring to the 1997 landslide defeat, he said the Tories were a "bit tired" at the time and had probably "run out of steam". He said Labour were now in a similar position and had to be voted out office.
