Commander Joe Salemme of the Chicago Police Department said a number of leads were being investigated. Vince Gerasole, a journalist at Chicago TV station CBS2, said Natasha had now been moved to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, which he said was known as one of the best in the US.
"This assault occurred on April 23 at 3.30 in the morning, it happened on the north side of Chicago," he said. "This is a hospital where they have the latest sorts of methods for attending to the sorts of injuries that Natasha suffered.
"We're pursuing numerous leads, primarily from surveillance video and we're aggressively looking at that angle." "She did go through one operation that we know of last week. She has been unconscious since the time of the attack."
Ms McShane had been studying at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Heriberto Viramontes has been arrested over the attack
Vince Gerasole, a journalist at a Chicago TV station, said local people were shocked by the attack. The journalist said Mr Viramontes was a suspected member of a street gang who had an arrest record "as long as a football field".
"What is really impacting so many people here is the fact that these brutal beatings took place in an area that is actually rather middle class, it's an area that's turning around," he said. The other person who was arrested is believed to be his girlfriend. She allegedly drove a get-away van after the attack.
"That this happened in that type of neighbourhood is really taking many people by surprise." Mr Gerasole said police were able to track the victims' mobile phones to the suspects' apartment where they found items stolen from the two women.
