It's the latest in a number of calls between the two men and was apparently "positive and constructive". It also appears that a meeting of the Lib Dem executive committee is planned for later - its members must agree if any kind of deal with the Tories is to go ahead.

"If I believed that, come what may, Labour must always be in power, I would have joined the Labour Party," he adds.
