When I went to the doctor suffering from anxiety they sent me to one of their funded Councilors. A couple of sessions with a Councilor was never going to solve the problem. Now I feel that I have to just cope with it on my own as the doctors are so reluctant to give medication. It affects my life but I don't see any other way.

  • I believe my depression stems from a genetic predisposition and psychological factors related to my upbringing. It took a very long time to find a combination of medications that are effective and I know that I NEED them.In my case, poor talking therapy has caused a considerable amount of distress and made me feel much worse. The pills work and good psychotherapy has the potential to help.

  • I believe that there are primarily two different categories of depression. Each type can & should be treated differently. After careful assessment and evaluation.Clinical depression, which is mainly caused by a brain chemical imbalance problem, should be treated medically with drugs to gradually correct the imbalance. While acute situational depression is best treated with careful counselling.

  • There is arguably a more "troubling and dangerous" obsession in our quick-fix world with viewing human beings as a collection of unbalanced chemicals that we should "correct". It is also worth nothing the author has "given lectures on behalf of a number of pharmaceutical companies". It is arguably in the interest of these companies to promote drugs, rather than human beings. There is arguably a more "troubling and dangerous" obsession in our quick-fix world with viewing human beings as a collection of unbalanced chemicals that we should "correct". • Actually medication is not usually fast working. They take weeks to kick in while they change things in your brain. During this time symptoms of depression can get worse.

  • I've struggled on and off with anxiety for about 15 years and have always resisted medication due to a fear of getting dependent. Psychotherapy sorted out many other things, but not the angst. After hitting a low recently, I was prescribed mild anti depressants for 6 months and I feel "normal." I'm not manically happy, just a lot less fearful. There are times when medication is needed.

  • From my own personal experience of both talking and pill therapies, I have found only the pills provide a long lasting effect. Talking is ok for the temporary but the medication has helped balance the chemicals in my brain and, over time, I will reduce the dose until I no longer need them. If I do relapse, I know I can have the support I need from my GP.
