His daughter Lucy Wilkins said her father was pleased to have met the Queen on her last visit to Scilly in the 1960s.
"Mum and dad both went on to the Britannia. Prince Philip spoke to him about the wreck of the Torrey Canyon which was quite topical at that time.
"To think they had been on board the royal yacht was really special."
Crowds began gathering early on Friday morning in Penzance to see the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh before they make their journey to Scilly.
The Vice Lord-Lieutenant for Cornwall, Michael Galsworthy, said: "The Cornish love a party and this is a wonderful reason to have a party, to meet the Queen.
"She has a great affection for Cornwall and I know she greatly looks forward to being back here. I am enormously excited."
