Four people have been injured after a gas cylinder exploded at the Manchester Food and Drink Festival. Three people have suffered serious burns after a gas cylinder exploded at the Manchester Food and Drink Festival.
The blast happened at about 20:46 BST on Monday at an event close to Manchester Town Hall in Albert Square. The blast happened shortly before 21:00 BST on Monday during a cookery demonstration at a stall in Albert Square by Manchester Town Hall.
A 38-year-old man suffered burns to his hands, legs and face while two other people were also taken to hospital with less serious burns to their arms and legs. The three, aged between 20 and 30, were taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary with burns to their arms and legs. One victim had facial burns.
The event was taking place as part of the 10-day food and drink festival. They are being transferred to the burns unit at Wythenshawe Hospital, later.
No details have been released about the extent of the fourth person's injuries. 'Licensed event'
Albert Square was evacuated after the explosion, which started a fire which destroyed a market stall at the festival. The demonstration at the Chilli Cocoa stall was one of many planned demonstrations at the 10-day food and drink festival.
A Greater Manchester fire service spokeswoman said: "Three 20kg propane cylinders had become involved in the fire and these had to be isolated by fire service personnel to stop the incident from escalating. Albert Square was evacuated after the explosion while fire crews isolated three 20kg propane cylinders.
"Three people received burns and were treated at the scene before being taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary." A Greater Manchester fire service spokesman said: "This was a cooking-related incident where we think the fire started in the cooking oil and escalated from here causing the gas cylinder to explode.
The Health and Safety Executive is invesigating the incident. "This was a licensed event where all the relevant health and safety guidelines will have been adhered to."
