Man with knife holds woman captive in Sandwell Woman, 79, released after 28-hour Warley stand-off
(about 2 hours later)
A 79-year-old woman is being held captive by a man armed with a knife at a house in the West Midlands. A man has been arrested after a 79-year-old woman was held captive for 28 hours at a house in the West Midlands.
Police negotiators have spent the night trying to persuade the man, 40, to free the woman from the house on Perry Hill Road in Warley, Sandwell. Police had been at the scene of the stand-off since 07:00 GMT on Sunday at a house on Perry Hill Road in Warley.
Officers have been at the scene since 07:00 GMT on Sunday and hope to "bring the situation to a peaceful and safe resolution", Ch Supt Phil Kay said. They said a 40-year-old man had been holding the woman while armed with a knife.
The incident is believed to be domestic-related, he added. Officers said a man had now given himself up and had been arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment. The woman was not seriously injured.
Armed officers remain at the scene and a number of roads surrounding the address have been cordoned off. Police negotiators, including armed officers, had cordoned off neighbouring roads and spent the night trying to persuade the man to free the woman.
Assistant Chief Constable Sharon Rowe, who is in charge of the operation, said: "Our main priority is the safety of the woman being held. Ch Supt Phil Kay said the incident was believed to be domestic-related.
"I understand the impact that a situation like this can have on the local community and have no doubt many people are concerned by the events unfolding here."
