Pakistan blast kills four people Pakistan blast kills five people
(about 1 hour later)
A suicide car bomber has killed at least four people in an attack in the Pakistani town of Parachinar, near the Afghan border, police say. A suicide car bomb has killed at least five people and wounded 20 others in Pakistan's tribal North West Frontier province.
Several other people were wounded when the car bomber rammed another car near a bus carrying passengers. The vehicle blew up as it rammed another car in the town of Parachinar.
Parachinar is situated about 250 km (150 miles) south of Peshawar, the capital of North West Frontier Province. Earlier in the day, the Pakistani army said four soldiers were killed during fighting with pro-Taleban militants in neighbouring North Waziristan.
The province has seen regular attacks by Islamist militants. The army also said it had killed 10 militants in the exchange, but there is no independent confirmation.
The suicide bomb in Parachinar went off at the bus station after the attacker rammed an explosive-laden car into another vehicle near a bus packed with passengers, Mohammed Kamal, a local police official, told AP agency.
Soldiers under attack
"According to our information, it was a suicide attack, and the body parts of the attacker are being collected," Mr Kamal said.
The attack in Parachinar followed only a few hours after pro-Taliban militants stormed a security checkpoint in Dosali, a remote area of the North Waziristan tribal region, triggering a shootout that killed four soldiers and 10 militants, officials said.
Five other soldiers were wounded, army spokesman Maj. Gen. Waheed Arshad told AP.
Pakistan has seen a sharp increase in attacks on the security services since government forces fought a bloody battle with radical Islamists last month for control of the Red Mosque in the capital, Islamabad.
The North West Frontier province is a stronghold of pro-Taleban militants, who oppose the government of Gen Pervez Musharraf.
