A woman had reported seeing something fall from the sky and smoke rise from the ground in the Hill of Fare area of Aberdeenshire just after 1800 BST. A woman had reported seeing flames coming from an aircraft followed by black smoke in the Hill of Fare area of Aberdeenshire just before 1800 BST.
Insp Steve Pratt, of Grampian Police, said he was "entirely satisfied there was nothing to it". However, it was later discovered a military exercise was going on at the time.

An air ambulance had been called out after fire and ambulance crews failed to find anything. A helicopter from RAF Boulmer had been scrambled and carried out a search of the area. Grampian Police, Braemar and Aberdeen Mountain Rescue teams and the fire service were also involved in the operation.
Insp Paul Bremner, of Grampian Police, said: "On this occasion, it appears it was a false alarm with good intent from a member of the public who genuinely thought she had seen something untoward."
