Long tailbacks on M1 motorway after lorry fire Long tailbacks on M1 motorway after lorry fire
(about 4 hours later)
The police are warning motorists of long tailbacks on the M1 motorway following a lorry fire. There were long tailbacks on the M1 motorway on Thursday morning following a lorry fire hours earlier.
One lane of the city-bound carriageway has been closed between the Lough Road, Lurgan and the Moira junctions until 09:30 GMT. Vehicles were backed up for about four miles between the junctions of Lurgan and Moira during rush hour.
Tailbacks of up to four miles are currently being experienced. The Belfast-bound carriageway has now been completely closed at Lough Road, Lurgan. Police said motorists will need to leave the motorway at Lurgan and rejoin at Moira.
Both Belfast-bound lanes will be closed later to facilitate the removal of the lorry. The country-bound lane is open. The lorry is now being removed, but the police said it could take a while.
BBC NI reporter Helen Jones said the lorry, which went on fire on Wednesday at 18:00 GMT, was still smouldering. The country-bound lane is open.
"From half past nine the one mile section of motorway will be closed heading towards Belfast so the lorry can be removed," she said. A police spokesperson said: "Recovery is on site. However, it will take some time to remove the vehicle safely due to its instability.
"We would like to thank motorists for their patience and understanding as we work to ensure the safety of those involved in recovery and road users."
The lorry, which went on fire on Wednesday at 18:00 GMT, was still smouldering at about 09:00 GMT on Thursday.
