Pat Ramsey, the SDLP MLA for Foyle, said: "This is an appalling and disgraceful incident. I was in the vicinity this morning and heard the shots that have resulted in the tragic loss of life." SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan said: "I strongly condemn this despicable and cowardly attack.
He added: "There is a deep sense of shock in Derry city centre today. "People in Derry utterly reject any such violence."
"Once again there are those in our community who are intent on destroying the unity of purpose that can only benefit everyone, especially our young people. He added: "Shootings like this are resented not just as ruthless attacks on individuals but also as attacks on the peace and image of the city."

The shooting in Derry comes less than 24 hours after a man's body was recovered from a lake in north Belfast.
The man, named locally as Kevin Kearney, had been shot and police have begun a murder investigation.
