Pat Ramsey, the SDLP MLA for Foyle, said: "This is an appalling and disgraceful incident. I was in the vicinity this morning and heard the shots that have resulted in the tragic loss of life. BBC Radio Foyle's Enda McClafferty, who is at the scene, said it is understood the victim is in his 30's and that his family arrived at the scene.
"My condolences and sympathies are with the family of the victim at this time. I would urge anyone with any information about this incident to contact the police." DUP Councillor Gary Middleton said: "Everyone is in shock.
The shooting in Derry comes less than 24 hours after a man's body was recovered from a lake in north Belfast. "I totally condemn all use of violence on our streets."
The man, named locally as Kevin Kearney, had been shot and police have begun a murder investigation. The murder, and one in Belfast on Wednesday night, were condemned by Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness.
"Those responsible claim to be dissident republicans. They are not republicans of any shade. They are entirely motivated by criminal intent," he said.
