(about 5 hours later)
About 40 firefighters have been dealing with a blaze at a shop in Belfast city centre. A fire that badly damaged a shop in Belfast city centre has been put out.
They were sent to B&M Bargains shop in Rosemary Street after being called by police who noticed the fire at about 05:10 BST on Friday. About 40 firefighters were sent to tackle the blaze at B&M Bargains shop in Rosemary Street after it was spotted by police at about 05:10 BST on Friday.
The building was extensively damaged. Neighbouring shops were left blackened by the smoke. Firefighters managed to contain the blaze to the first floor of the three-storey building and prevent it spreading to neighbouring shops.
Fire Service Group Commander Dermot Rooney said it was "quite a big fire" and the building was "well alight". A spokesman said firefighters "worked in challenging conditions" throughout the day to bring it under control.
"The information from the scene is that we are making progress," he said. "At this stage it's too early to determine the cause of the fire and an investigation will begin in due course," he added.
"There is no information suggesting spread to other buildings."
Among the fire appliances battling the fire are two aerial ones.
Mr Rooney said no members of the public were in danger.
