One dead in Las Vegas club shooting at Bally's casino Two dead in Nevada school shooting
(about 1 hour later)
A man allegedly opened fire in a Las Vegas nightclub after being denied a refund, killing a patron who tried to intervene, police say. A shooting at a middle school in the US state of Nevada has left two people dead and two critically injured.
A security guard and a manager Drai's After Hours, a club at Bally's Hotel-Casino were injured and taken to hospital, police Sgt John Sheahan said. School officials say a suspect is "down" and there is no longer any danger, but they did not identify the deceased.
The shooting happened at the club on the Las Vegas Strip shortly before 06:00 local time (13:00 GMT). The incident began at 07:15 local time (14:15 GMT) shortly before classes were to start.
The suspect is also in hospital with unspecified injuries. Students from Sparks Middle School and a nearby primary school were evacuated and classes were cancelled.
Police believe he acted alone. A student at Sparks, outside Reno, Nevada, has told local media he saw another student shooting a teacher.
"The person is in custody," Sgt Sheahan said. "The weapon is in custody." 'Horrific'
Officials said the suspect paid an unspecified cover charge to enter Drai's then demanded his money back before shooting a manager. "I thought it was a firecracker at first but the student was pointing the gun at the teacher after the teacher told him to put it down," Kyle Nucum, 13, told the Reno Gazette-Journal.
The gunman was then subdued by patrons, one of whom was killed in the struggle. Another security guard was injured. "Then the student fired a shot at the teacher and everybody ran away… While we were running we heard four or five more shots."
Although violent crime in Las Vegas fell by 13% last year, and was down 11% for the first part of 2013, a recent rash of incidents has hit the headlines. Police say the shooting happened on the school's campus but outside the building itself.
A deadly shooting and car chase on the Strip in February killed three. A spokeswoman for Renown Regional Medical Center says two male children are in a critical condition at the hospital.
A murder trial in that case, with the defendant facing the death penalty, is scheduled to begin in December. At an evacuation pick-up point, parents were reunited with children, some of whom were in tears, the Associated Press reported.
"We came flying down here to get our kids," said Mike Fiorica, whose nephew attends the school. "It's really chaotic. You can imagine how parents are feeling. You don't know if your kid's okay."
In a statement, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval said he was "deeply saddened to learn of the horrific shooting at Sparks Middle School this morning".
Vegas club shooting
The local education authority had held a session earlier this year on safety measures in its schools after 26 people, including 20 children, were killed at a primary school in Newtown, Connecticut, in December.
In a country where fatal shootings are an almost daily occurrence, even that massacre did not lead to nationwide gun control measures.
Elsewhere in Nevada earlier on Monday morning, a man allegedly opened fire in a Las Vegas Strip nightclub after being denied a refund for an entry fee, killing a patron who tried to intervene, police say.
A security guard and a manager at Drai's After Hours, a club at Bally's Hotel-Casino, were injured and taken to hospital, police Sgt John Sheahan said.
The suspect is also in hospital with unspecified injuries and police believe he acted alone.
