Family members of the slain teacher identified him as Michael Landsberry. Mr Landsberry, 45, was a military veteran who served two tours in Afghanistan with the Nevada National Guard.
"It doesn't feel real. It's totally surreal to have it happen," the victim's sister-in-law Chanda Landsberry told the Los Angeles Times. He leaves behind a wife and two stepdaughters.
"In my estimation, he is a hero," said Reno Deputy Police Chief Tom Robinson. "We do know he was trying to intervene."
Sparks, Nevada, Mayor Geno Martini said Mr Landsberry "proudly served his country and was proudly defending the students at his school".
