A man has died in a crash involving a lorry and a car on the A417 at Crickley Hill near Gloucester. A main commuter route between the M4 and the M5 near Gloucester has been closed after two fatal crashes.
Police said a 54-year-old driver from Cheltenham died in a head-on collision with an HGV near Little Witcombe at about 03:10 GMT. A 54-year-old man from Cheltenham died in a crash involving a lorry and a car on the A417 at Crickley Hill at about 03:10 GMT, police said.
The road has been closed in both directions between the Air Balloon Roundabout and the A46. A second crash also involving a car and an HGV on the same road between the Air Balloon roundabout and Nettleton Bottom happened at about 11:35.
The busy commuter route is likely to be shut until mid-afternoon, the Highways Agency said. Police said a person travelling in a car had died in the second crash.
'Avoid area' The A417 has been closed in both directions for about five miles from the A46 to the Cowley roundabout.
Gloucestershire Police said the driver of a Ford Focus died in a head-on collision with an HGV near Little Witcombe, in the first crash.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both the lorry drivers were not thought to have been injured, police added.
After the initial crash, the Highways Agency said the road between the A46 and the Air Balloon roundabout was likely to be shut until mid-afternoon.

A Gloucestershire Police spokesperson said the victim, who was driving a Ford Focus, had been travelling down the hill and was involved in the crash with a lorry going the other way. Neil Sterio, from the agency, said: "People should avoid the area if possible. Even the diversion routes are likely to be heavily congested.
