A main commuter route between the M4 and the M5 near Gloucester has been closed after two fatal crashes. Three people have been killed in two separate crashes on a commuter route in Gloucestershire.

A second crash also involving a car and an HGV on the same road between the Air Balloon roundabout and Nettleton Bottom happened at about 11:35. Two women were killed when a car they were in collided with an HGV on the same road near Nettleton Bottom at about 11:35 GMT.
Police said a person travelling in a car had died in the second crash. Both lorry drivers were uninjured, police added.
The A417 has been closed in both directions for about five miles from the A46 to the Cowley roundabout. The A417 which was earlier closed from the A46 to the Air Balloon roundabout has now been re-opened.
It remains closed between the Air Balloon roundabout and the Cowley roundabout.
The route connects the M4 and the M5, between Gloucester and Swindon, and is used by about 30,000 vehicles each day.

After the initial crash, the Highways Agency said the road between the A46 and the Air Balloon roundabout was likely to be shut until mid-afternoon.
