(about 3 hours later)
Reports are coming in that a man has been shot in Newry, County Down. A man is in critical condition after being shot in Newry, County Down.
It is believed he was shot in his stomach. It is believed the man was attacked at or near his home in what police called the "Parkhead Crescent area".
The SDLP MLA for Newry and Armagh Dominic Bradley said he believed the shooting happened at Parkhead Crescent in the city. Officers were called just after 19:00 GMT on Saturday and a spokeswoman said the man, thought to be in his 50s, had been shot in the stomach and knee.
A spokesperson for Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry said a man had been admitted on Saturday evening following a shooting and was in a critical but stable condition. The man had emergency surgery at nearby Daisy Hill Hospital, and staff there described his condition as critical but stable.
Mr Bradley said he was shocked to hear about the shooting. Sinn Fein Newry councillor Charlie Casey condemned those responsible.
"This type of action has no support whatsoever in Newry and cannot be justified," he said. 'No support whatsoever'
"It is wrong and no strategy, aims, or objectives can make it right. I would appeal to anyone who can help the police in their investigation of this crime to do so without delay." "If someone comes to shoot someone in their home, in the current climate where everyone is trying to work hard towards peace, it has to be totally condemned," he said.
"We thought things like this had disappeared into the past.
"It is unfortunate and sad, and if anyone knows anything about it then they should contact the police."
