However, motorists heading into Cardiff are still facing delays following an incident on the A4232 Ely link road, southbound between Culverhouse Cross and Leckwith. The first incident at 07:50 GMT involved four cars close to the junction 41 turn-off for Swansea's Fabian Way.
It has led to traffic queuing both ways at the M4 slip-road at Cardiff West (junction 33) with congestion stretching back to junction 34 at Miskin. One car blocked the fast lane of the two-lane section, leading to major congestion westbound.
Further crash
Shortly afterwards, a six-vehicle collision nearby brought traffic to a complete standstill.
As traffic officers dealt with both incidents, a further crash happened involving two cars.
"There have been no serious casualties and officers are still at the scene," a police spokesman said.
All vehicles were cleared from the carriageways shortly after 09:00 GMT, and cameras show traffic has now returned to normal in the area.
An earlier incident heading into Cardiff has also been cleared.
