The former Formula One champion Michael Schumacher has suffered a head injury while skiing in the French Alps, according to French media reports. The former world motor racing champion Michael Schumacher has suffered a serious head injury in an off-piste skiing accident in a chic resort in the French Alps.
The seven-time world racing champion was taken to hospital following the accident in the resort of Méribel, Europe 1 and RMC radio reported on Sunday. French media reported that the seven-time Formula One champion's injuries were not life-threatening.
Gernignon Christophe Lecomte, Méribel's resort director, reportedly said the injury was "not very serious". He was quoted by Radio Monte Carlo Sport as saying the former racing driver hit his head against a rock at 11.07am local time. Schumacher had been wearing a helmet. The head of the Méribel ski resort, where Schumacher was skiing with his 14-year-old son, told Radio Monte Carlo that 44-year-old Schumacher was taken to hospital by helicopter after falling and striking his head on a rock at 11.07am local time.
Lecomte said on rmcsport.bfmtv.com: "Help responded quickly, at 11.15am. He was airlifted and taken to hospital in Moutiers. He was shocked, a little shaken but conscious. It may be a head injury but it is not very serious." Christophe Gernigon-Lecomte said rescuers reached him eight minutes later. "He was in shock, somewhat agitated, but conscious" when he was taken to the nearest hospital at Moûtiers, said Gernignon-Lecomte.
The 44-year-old German retired for the final time in 2012 after a three-season comeback with Mercedes. He was moved shortly afterwards to Grenoble hospital. The Dauphiné Libéré newspaper reported that he was suffering from a "severe brain trauma" but that his injuries were "not life threatening".
Authorities said he was wearing a helmet when skiing close to one of the resort's most difficult pistes, reserved for the world's most accomplished skiers.
The former Formula 1 champion fell while off piste under la Dent de Burgin, located between the extremely difficult pistes of La Biche and Mauduit. The latter is named after the former French skiing champion Georges Mauduit.
Grenoble hospital said it would issue a statement shortly about Schumacher's condition.
Méribel, where Schumacher owns a chalet, is one of the top ski resorts in the French Alps.
