The airline said that all passengers and crew of the Rome-bound plane were safe. According to police spokesman Pierre Grangean, the unnamed co-pilot, an Ethiopian born in 1983, locked the cockpit door when the pilot went to the toilet and hijacked the craft because he allegedly wanted asylum in Switzerland.
Ethiopian Airlines said in a statement that one of its flights had been “forced to proceed” to Geneva, adding that all passengers and crew were safe at the airport. He then asked to refuel at Geneva, landed the plane and climbed down from the cockpit window on a rope, and gave himself up to police.
Swiss officials say the co-pilot  has been arrested after he took control of the aircraft, allegedly because he wanted Swiss asylum. The man is now being questioned by the authorities.
