He was taken into custody on suspicion of dangerous driving and subsequently bailed. Police said the man, from Doncaster, was later released on bail.
Police said formal identification had not yet taken place. 'Just terrible'
The driver of the Seat suffered a broken leg in the crash. Sgt Pete Serhatlic told BBC Radio Sheffield: "It's absolutely horrific, it's an extremely sad situation.
The road has been reopened by officers, who have appealed for anyone with information to contact South Yorkshire Police. "To a certain degree it's pretty unbelievable that five young people have lost their lives in an incident like this."
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue tweeted: "We send our deepest condolences to the families affected by the fatal RTC (road traffic collision) we attended last night." The scene of the crash is just 100m from the location of a collision which killed three teenagers on the same road three years ago.
A 14, 15, and 16-year-old died after the car they were in hit a tree in 2011. Tributes to them are still visible on a nearby tree.
A man who lives near the scene said: "It's just terrible. It was foggy here last night just like it is now. It's only a few years ago that all those other kids died. Terrible."
Formal identification had not yet taken place.
