The crew of the rescue helicopter carried out first aid during the transfer to hospital but the woman later died. Helicopter winch man, Lt Cdr Andy Watts, said: "Everything was playing against us including the strong westerly wind which meant we had to hover higher than normal.
RNAS Culdrose press officer Pete Wooldridge said: "The difficulty for the helicopter crew was that it was late at night and it was pretty dark. "The gulley was only five yards (4.6m) wide and about 140ft (43m) deep but we had help from the police helicopter which illuminated the scene.
"It was also quite a narrow gully. But we got the shout at about nine o'clock and were on the scene by nine twenty. "We got the woman into the aircraft and tried to resuscitate her but she remained unconscious throughout the flight."
"We had a trained paramedic on board who would have been doing his utmost to keep her alive."
