Confirmation has arrived that Ben Arfa will be playing no more football this season, from the French LFP (Ligue de Football Professionel, don’t you know), who have released a statement saying that, as a result of the earlier decision of Fifa’s Player Status Committee, “the legal committee of the LFP, which had an emergency meeting this afternoon, has no choice but to prohibit Hatem Ben Arfa from participating in official matches with Nice until the end of the season”. |

This seems like a decision that may well have been made according to the rulebook – and I can understand why the rules exist – but in the circumstances is entirely lacking in logic or reason. If a player can expect a 15-year career, if they’re lucky, Ben Arfa has lost a thirtieth of his to idiotic bureaucracy. According to l’Equipe, a judge appointed by Fifa has decided that Hatem Ben Arfa’s appearance for Newcastle’s Under-21 side in August does count as an official match and that, having also played for Hull, he cannot therefore sign for another club this season. His proposed move to Nice is therefore very unlikely to happen, with the French league’s legal committee to sit today and make a final and binding decision. | According to l’Equipe, a judge appointed by Fifa has decided that Hatem Ben Arfa’s appearance for Newcastle’s Under-21 side in August does count as an official match and that, having also played for Hull, he cannot therefore sign for another club this season. “I was looking on YouTube for a Stoichkov chip – I think it was against Man Utd in the early 90s – the one where the Bulgarian maestro wiggled into the box before putting his foot on the ball and looking around – “Look how much space I’m in, look how easy I beat you,” he seemed to be saying – and then scooping the ball over the standing Schmeichel’s head as the least obvious way of finishing the move (Stoichkov was famous for his powerful strikes, after all),” writes Michelle Lesley Ward. “I think that was the first time I realised that scoring a goal could also be a way of insulting the other team. Good old Hristo! Made from the same stuff as Suárez and Costa, probably better, probably crazier. I couldn’t find the goal so I thought I’d just describe it. Plenty of people must remember it.” | “I was looking on YouTube for a Stoichkov chip – I think it was against Man Utd in the early 90s – the one where the Bulgarian maestro wiggled into the box before putting his foot on the ball and looking around – “Look how much space I’m in, look how easy I beat you,” he seemed to be saying – and then scooping the ball over the standing Schmeichel’s head as the least obvious way of finishing the move (Stoichkov was famous for his powerful strikes, after all),” writes Michelle Lesley Ward. “I think that was the first time I realised that scoring a goal could also be a way of insulting the other team. So here we are, then. The 30th day of the January 2015 transfer window, and things are really hotting up. And there’s no better way to start the day than with a dose of the Rumour Mill, which Barry Glendenning has written this morning and includes a suggestion that Chelsea will snaffle Gerson from the clutches of Manchester City. | So here we are, then. And there’s no better way to start the day than with a dose of the Rumour Mill, which Barry Glendenning has written this morning and includes a suggestion that Chelsea will snaffle Gerson from the clutches of Manchester City. |
Listening to the radio last night, the Rumour Mill was amused to hear former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan’s frank admission that he once signed a “defensive striker” (ie one that rarely scored) as a sop to a manager whose daughter was going out with a particular player who wanted his pal at Selhurst Park. |
It was a revealing insight into a world we’d previously believed to be ruthless and cut-throat and will now have us questioning the motivation behind every potential deal.
