Purnell named as Hain successor Purnell heads reshuffle changes
(40 minutes later)
James Purnell will take over as work and pensions secretary following the resignation of Peter Hain, Downing Street has said. James Purnell has been appointed work and pensions secretary in the reshuffle following Peter Hain's resignation.
Mr Purnell, 37, had been culture secretary since Gordon Brown became prime minister in June last year. Mr Purnell, 37, is succeeded as culture secretary by Andy Burnham, 38, who in turn is replaced as chief secretary to the Treasury by Yvette Cooper.
Before becoming MP for Stalybridge and Hyde, he worked for the Institute for Public Policy Research, the BBC and the Number 10 Downing Street Policy Unit. Ms Cooper's job as housing minister goes to Caroline Flint.
He has also served as a councillor in Islington, north London. There has been no replacement announced for Mr Hain's other job of Welsh secretary, although Downing Street is expected to fill the post shortly.

As culture secretary Mr Purnell oversaw several high-profile projects, including the 2012 London Olympics, the switch from analogue to digital television and the renewal of the BBC's charter.
Before that, he was pensions minister in the Department for Work and Pensions - which he now heads - working on the development of a national pensions saving scheme.
For the Conservatives, shadow work and pensions secretary Chris Grayling congratulated Mr Purnell on his appointment, saying he hoped he would "be able to take a firm grip on a department that is clearly losing its way".
Mr Purnell faced embarrassment last year when it emerged an NHS trust had superimposed a picture of him into a promotional photograph.
