Mr Purnell, 37, is succeeded as culture secretary by Andy Burnham, 38, who in turn is replaced as chief secretary to the Treasury by Yvette Cooper. Mr Purnell, 37, is expected to be succeeded as culture secretary by 38-year-old Andy Burnham.
Ms Cooper's job as housing minister goes to Caroline Flint. His chief secretary to the Treasury job is expoected to go to Yvette Cooper, with Caroline Flint succeeding her as housing minister.
There has been no replacement announced for Mr Hain's other job of Welsh secretary, although Downing Street is expected to fill the post shortly. The BBC has also learned that Paul Murphy is to succeed Mr Hain as Secretary of State for Wales.
Mr Hain resigned after the Electoral Commission said it was referring undeclared donations made to his campaign to be Labour's deputy leader to the police.
Downing Street said further details of the resulting mini-reshuffle would be announced later.
