Election 2015 live: Tories 'defending the indefensible' on non-dom tax loophole, says Ed Miliband Election 2015 live: Tories claim Ed Miliband would 'stab Britain in the back' and be a friend to Putin over nuclear weapons
(about 20 hours later)
Labour's announcement that it is scrapping non-dom tax status for UK residents seems to have caused disarray in Conservative ranks with apparently contradictory statements from the Chancellor George Osborne and Education Secretary Nicky Morgan this morning. The Conservatives have launched a highly personal attack on Ed Miliband this morning over the replacement of the UK's nuclear weapons system.
After the dust settled David Cameron described Labour's policy as "frankly pretty chaotic" while George Osborne branded it as "a total shambles". Michael Fallon, the defence secretary, said the Labour leader would “stab the United Kingdom in the back to become Prime Minister” by agreeing to scale back the weapons system from three to four submarines.
Ed Miliband meanwhile hit back, announcing that the Tories were "now defending the indefensible" over the loophole. Business minister Nick Boles also suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin would be pleased if Ed Miliband became prime minister, a claim met with derision on social media.
