Tenth man arrested over Hatton Garden heist Eight men in court over Hatton Garden heist
(35 minutes later)
A 10th man has been arrested over the Hatton Garden security vault heist, police have said. Eight men have appeared in court in London charged with plotting the Hatton Garden jewellery heist.
The news came as eight men were due to appear in court for the multi-million pound theft. A ninth man has been bailed pending further inquiries. The men, who arrived at Westminster magistrates court in a convoy of police vans with an armed police escort, were all remanded in custody.
The Metropolitan police said the latest arrest was of a 42-year-old man in Essex at 9.40am on Thursday. He was detained on suspicion of conspiracy to burgle and was being taken to a London police station for questioning. As they appeared in court, Scotland Yard said a 10th man had been arrested over the raid at the security vaults in London’s jewellery district over the Easter weekend. A ninth suspect has been bailed pending further inquiries.
The other eight men were taken to Westminster magistrates court in a convoy of police vans with an armed police escort. Terry Perkins, 67, Daniel Jones, 58, and Hugh Doyle, 48, all from Enfield, were due to appear alongside William Lincoln, 59, of Bethnal Green, east London, and John Collins, 74, of north London. Brian Reader, 76, and Paul Reader, 50, both of Dartford, Kent, and Carl Wood, 58, of Cheshunt were also due to appear. All eight face the same charge of conspiracy to burgle. They were arrested earlier this week on suspicion of burglary from the safety deposit box vault at Hatton Garden, the heart of London’s jewellery district, over the Easter weekend. All eight faced the same charge of conspiracy to burgle. They were accused of conspiring to enter as a trespasser the Hatton Garden Safety deposit at 88-90 Hatton Gardens with intent to steal between 1 April and 19 May.
They were remanded in custody by district judge Tan Ikram after a short hearing and are next due to appear at Southwark crown court on 4 June.
