Manchester United v PSG: International Champions Cup – live! Manchester United v PSG: International Champions Cup – live!
(35 minutes later)

Ha. I criticised them earlier, but this, from PSG’s official Twitter feed, is very nice:

10.01pm ET03:01
Jamal, go to sleep!
@timmyhilleh starting to regret why I'm awake.. I've got to work tomorrow.
9.58pm ET02:58
Tactics corner: I think Man United are being played around in midfield: Schweinsteiger and Carrick have had to do too much defensive work – they haven’t had chance to show their passing range – and Stambouli, Matuidi and Verratti have shown a bit more energy and mobility in that central area. I think the balance is wrong in this United side.
9.56pm ET02:56
Half-time: Manchester United 0-2 PSG
That was a reasonably embarrassing 45 minutes from Man United. Not much happening for them, in attack or defence. PSG have a deserved lead – they’ve been much the better side.
9.55pm ET02:55
45 min: United, I think, are quite happy for half-time, too. They need a sports drink, a segment of orange, and a kick up the arse.
Peter Crosby asks:
Hello Tim,
Why the fudge is the so-far excellent MLS All Stars vs Tottenham game not getting a well deserved MBM? Did they not come up with the requisite $$$ or something? Curious how you only choose top 4 teams to cover …
(Not bitter much.)
You make a very good point, Peter! I’ll ask the boss. Two-nil to the all-stars, right?
9.52pm ET02:52
45 min: PSG content to keep the ball and wait for half time, but Stambouli gives it away to Rooney, and … oh. Rooney’s ball for Young is overhit, and it’s a goal kick.
9.51pm ET02:51
44 min: That’s a terrible giveaway from Ashley Young, and Moura breaks quickly, with the Man United midfield blowing hard. Luckily for Young, Moura’s ball to Ibrahimovic is almost as bad, and United can clear.
9.49pm ET02:49
42 min: Moura shoots from long range after PSG broke with Ibrahimovic, but De Gea gets everything behind it.
9.47pm ET02:47
40 min: Cynical foul by Depay on Stambouli as PSG tried to break, but no foul.
Evan O’Callaghan has a question:
@timmyhilleh In 10 years time will we be looking back at this cup as the benign forebear to an evil, hegemonic global super league?
Yeah, probably!
9.46pm ET02:46
38 min: PSG are on top here. United look chastened. Rooney and Shaw have shown some vim and pep, but the rest need to step it up!
9.44pm ET02:44
37 min: Depay with a powerful low free-kick that Trapp can only parry, but Maxwell is on hand to shuffle it behind. Mata’s corner is cleared by Ibrahimovic, and PSG settle.

9.43pm ET02:43
36 min: What a goal this is. It started in midfield, with Moura: he played a lovely ball for Ibrahimovic to run on to, and the Swede carried it forward, fed Maxwell, who was in so much space – where was Darmian? – and Maxwell’s low cross was met superbly by Ibrahimovic, who just continued his run. Man United’s defence looked like statues. Too easy!

GOAL! Manchester United 0-2 PSG (Ibrahimovic 34)
That is a brilliant goal. PSG lead 2-0!
9.41pm ET02:41
34 min: Disappointing ball from Young, and Trapp claims.
9.40pm ET02:40
33 min: More excellent play from Shaw, who carried it about 50 yards, at pace, fed Young, but his low cross was intercepted by Thiago. Corner to Manchester.
9.38pm ET02:38
31 min: Matuidi did really well there, but I wonder if De Gea could have been more positive. You know: come and “cleaned everything out”, as they say in the parlance.
Here’s a wacky email from Count Danté, aka The Humble Gent:
Hello,
I’m struggling to sleep, my job’s on the line, ma woman gone done me wrong, the match sounds poop and my dog’s just died, so I thought I’d tell a joke and it goes a little something like this:
I called the RSPCA today and said, “I’ve just found a suitcase in the woods containing a fox and four cubs.”
“That’s terrible,” she replied. “Are they moving?”
“I’m not sure, to be honest,” I said, “But that would explain the suitcase.”
9.35pm ET02:35
28 min: Man United try to respond with Rayne Wooney, but his shot is over. It was handball anyway.
9.35pm ET02:35
27 min: Great goal from PSG, but too easy from Man United’s perspective. Maxwell, I think it was, had time in midfield, and he saw Matuidi running beyond the centre-backs. The pass was really well hit, over the top, and Matuidi got ahead of the defence to poke it past De Gea, who was off limits. PSG lead!

9.32pm ET02:32
GOAL! Manchester 0-1 PSG (Matuidi 25)
But that’s PSG ahead!
9.32pm ET02:32
24 min: Much as it pains me to say this, Ibrahimovic has been sloppy tonight: he should have fed Augustin down the right, to put Manchester in trouble, but could only find Blind. Slack.

23 min: Beautiful touch by Mata on the touchline, but PSG are very quick to get back. Now Mata has the ball in the net! Fabulous long pass from Blind, over the heads of the two centre-backs, but the flag was up for offside.23 min: Beautiful touch by Mata on the touchline, but PSG are very quick to get back. Aurier looks long for Ibra, but he’s offside.22 min: PSG just starting to express themselves. Man United need to get Schweinsteiger and Carrick on the ball. I think he gave Shaw a bump there, but he wasn’t penalised: another good chance for Zlatan!21 min: Corner for PSG. Lucas with it, and Ibrahimovic loses Shaw, but sends his header wide! 20 min: Ooh, Rooney was almost in there: Shaw went down the left, crossed well, and Thiago did just enough to take it off Rooney’s head. Shaw had made several good runs down the left. I know he didn’t do amazingly last year, but he’s a good attacking full-back, isn’t he? Even if he is a bit tubby. Maybe that’s unfair. Let’s say he’s solid.20 min: Ooh, Rooney was almost in there: Shaw went down the left, crossed well, and Thiago did just enough to take it off Rooney’s head. 18 min: Man United give it away cheaply in defence, not for the first time, and Ibrahimovic is free about 30 yards from goal. Is that a trip by Schweini? Ref says no, and Ibrahimovic is pissed.18 min: Man United give it away cheaply in defence, not for the first time, and Ibrahimovic is free about 30 yards from goal. Is that a trip by Schweini? 17 min: Maxwell does well down the left, but his cross is headed clear by Jones, who was in the right position. Then Verratti looks for Ibrahimovic, but again his ball is overhit. Now a big chance for Depay! Rooney went down the left, turned Thiago and fed Depay, who arrived late … and spanked his shot well wide. He went for power. He shouldn’t have!17 min: Maxwell does well down the left, but his cross is headed clear by Jones, who was in the right position. Then Verratti looks for Ibrahimovic, but again his ball is overhit. Over the past few seasons, PSG have been very active on social media, presumably to try to convince everyone that they’re open and accessible, and not some soulless modern behemoth bankrolled by Qatari oil money. All admirable stuff, and I appreciate their effort, but alas, alack, their posts are extremely boring. Sorry PSG! Here’s former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson throwing the first pitch in the game between the Cubs and the Rockies in Chicago today. So much to enjoy! I like his Roshes. Plus, he looks good for 58, doesn’t he? So, despite United insisting football matters are always the prime concern regarding any aspect of club strategy, commercial imperatives are a major factor that have to be considered. Van Gaal understands this though, given the pressure he is under to win trophies, he will be keen to have next year’s tour as low-key and player-friendly as is practical.
Van Gaal spoke of how the trip has been better suited to preparation for the new campaign. “We have already changed a lot of things in relation to this tour. The last tour, we were on the other coast with more heat and humidity and that was a negative,” he said, of the final match against Liverpool in Miami. “It is also hot here, but people say it is not normal.
