In sentencing McBride the judge said Majella Lynch came from a happy family, the youngest of three children. | |
"She worked at the Coal Board and NHS and was a very attractive woman with a lot friends. | |
"After her son was given up for adoption and her parents died in 1996 and 1998 she descended into chronic alcoholism." | |
She was "lonely" but a well-known figure in the area, often seen outside her flat with a can of Special Brew. | |
McBride had an extensive criminal record, including aggravated burglary, wounding with intent, robbery and possession of a shotgun, the court heard. | |
He was on licence after being handed a life sentence in the late 1990s for these crimes. | |
Of the effect on her family, the judge said: "Maj's loss has been deeply felt by her brother and sister and in particular her brother is pained by the thought he could have done more to help his sister, although he could not have done." | |
