The cranes are believed to have been transporting material for a bridge when they collapsed. The cranes were being used to restore a bridge in the city when they tipped over.
Emergency services in Alphen aan den Rijn confirmed the accident on Twitter, and wrote: "There are reports of several wounded," according to Reuters.
Ton Koot, a spokesman for the local fire brigade in Alphen aan den Rijn, told NOS that heavy machinery is being transported to the scene in order to search for anyone trapped in the wreckage, the Associated Press reported.
Koot said he didn't know how seriously injured the victims were.
Dutch public broadcaster NOS reported that 20 people were injured, many of them seriously.
