PIP supports adults with learning disabilities to achieve their potential. Clare in the community started life in the social work magazine Care Weekly and transferred to Guardian Society in September 1995. Over the years, the dimensions and design of the strip have changed, as has the size of Clare’s head, shape of her nose and legibility of her dialogue. The cartoons in the exhibition cover Clare’s entire twenty year life.
Working holistically, PIP provides a dynamic range of services designed to build vital life skills, promote independence and build self esteem. PIP caters for a broad range of artistic talents and interests: some of the people it supports wish to develop a serious artistic practice, while others simply want to explore creative pursuits for their own enjoyment and therapeutic value. In 2004, BBC Radio 4 commissioned Harry Venning and David Ramsden to adapt Clare for radio. It has since won a Sony Radio Award, and the show is currently under offers for an eleventh series.
This exhibition has been created by artists with learning disabilities to acknowledge and celebrate the barriers that the artists have overcome to exhibit today. Harry Venning is a freelance cartoonist, illustrator, comedy writer, conference visualizer, and cartoon workshop host.
