Russell Broadbent: the Australian people are standing up and saying "no, not on".
Liberal MP Russell Broadbent is unequivocal on his position.
Indefinite detention is not acceptable, we’ve been through this before. Women and children in detention behind razor wire in this country or locked away on an island is unacceptable.
Broadbent says he has had visits from clinicians all over Australia, saying exactly what the Childrens Hospital staff have said.
It becomes broadly unacceptable to the Australian people. That’s the message here. The Australian people, through the Royal Childrens Hospital have shifted and they have said our detention policies are not good enough. Therefore long term indefinite detention is not acceptable in this country. It always comes to this. I knew it would come to this. It has come to this again. The Australian people are standing up and saying, no, not on.
Asked what is holding up policy change, Broadbent says:
When the people shift, the politicians will shift and they will understand they need to do something in regard to long term detention. I know the government is going to enormous efforts to resolve this issue in this nation.

Liberal MP Russell Broadbent calls for an end to children in detention
After doctors at the Royal Childrens Hospital in Melbourne refused to return children to detention centres, Liberal MP Russell Broadbent has made a stunning intervention. Broadbent has long campaigned for more humane asylum seeker policies, more so in the Howard government than under Tony Abbott.
He told Fran Kelly that the move by doctors and staff at the Childrens Hospital was significant.
These people are not leftie activists...this organisation is the most revered organisation in Victoria bar none. They are a conservative group of people who just service our community in the most amazing way. The Royal Children staff supported by their board have made an amazing statement here...
Here they are saying there is something wrong in the world and we are prepared to stand up on last Friday like they have and given us this amazing photograph and an opportunity to see what they are thinking.
You wouldn’t say the Herald Sun was the most leftist magazine in Australia.
Broadbent said he accepted Tony Abbott had stopped the boats, using the turnback policy, among other things. He supports turnbacks because “in some cases our generosity was being pushed to its limits”.
Having said that, one child in detention is one too many - whether it is one or 200 is irrelevant.
He says he knows that Turnbull would like children out of detention and in community care.

Good morning revolutionaries,Good morning revolutionaries,
Today, I would urge you all to go all Che Guevara and release your inner revolutionary for this, the second sitting week of the ReTurnBull. But the weekend was not all plain railing for the prime minister. He was jeered at the NSW Liberal State Council when he suggested the Liberal party was not run by factions. Turnbull is also facing discontent within grass roots members over the party’s failure to implement the full Howard reforms which would allow members more say in preselections. Tony Abbott is expected to be sitting on the backbench this week for the first time since he lost the job. He will be sitting next to Queensland Liberal Andrew Laming, who took part in a move to dump Abbott in February so that little bench will have a chilly air. Abbott has had almost four weeks to lick his wounds and ride the long board before moving into his backbench office next to his former pal Bronwyn Bishop. They will probably not be meeting for morning tea, given Bishop’s switch to Turnbull after Abbott took so much flak for her penchant for helicopters.Tony Abbott is expected to be sitting on the backbench this week for the first time since he lost the job.
