Labor has not made a specific allegation against Malcolm Turnbull on his tax affairs. Lenore Taylor has written an analysis piece here.
This morning, Shorten’s point is about having more money to access managed funds that are registered in tax havens. Both Shorten and his shadow assistant treasurer Andrew Leigh have mentioned that you need to have $1m to buy into one of the funds.
Shorten links Turnbull’s wealth to the Coalition’s bill going through the senate today which:
exempts Australian-owned private companies from the requirement that the Commissioner of Taxation publish certain tax information in relation to corporate tax entities that report total income above $100 million.
This was the anti-kidnapping bill released earlier this year which was required because 700 private companies would be captured by the new tax transparency laws covering more than 1,600 companies with a turnover of more than $100m should be exempt.
The publication of the financial statements of large private companies - such as Gina Rinehart’s company - raised “real safety concerns”.
We don’t know whether Turnbull has a private company with a turnover of more than $100m but Shorten has linked his general wealth with this bill.
What is really important here is transparency. There is a chance today for Malcolm Turnbull’s Liberals in the senate to choose transparency over secrecy. Malcolm Turnbull’s Liberals have a chance today to vote for legislation, which makes sure that we don’t cloak the activities of large companies in Australia in secrecy and Australians can’t see what happens.
