The shooting occurred in Brice’s Barber Shop, in the 1000 block of Eighth Street SE, between M and L streets. It’s one of two businesses on a short, quiet block north of the Navy Yard that is in Barracks Row, an area lined with shops and restaurants and named after the Marine Barracks, about two blocks away on the other side of the Southeast Freeway.
Newsham described a calculated attack. “Three males wearing masks entered the establishment and began firing,” he told reporters. But “it appears that both victims will survive,” he said.
WAMU radio broadcast a feature on the shop last year, noting that it had been a mainstay for a half-century and that it was a popular spot for residents and Marines. The owner could not be reached Friday afternoon to comment.
Police said that there were patrons in the barbershop when the shooting started but that because it is far enough away from other stores and Barracks Row’s normally bustling streets, few pedestrians were in the area. A parking lot is across the street from the shop.
Police cordoned off the block for hours and placed six evidence markers just outside the shop’s front door. | Police cordoned off the block for hours and placed six evidence markers just outside the shop’s front door. |
