A man has been charged with attempted murder after a police officer was attacked with an axe as she tried to make an arrest. A man has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of a police officer who was attacked with an axe as she attempted to make an arrest.
Nathan Sumner, 35, of Plowright Close, Sheffield, is also accused of other offences following the attack in the city on Wednesday night. PC Lisa Bates suffered a fractured skull and broken leg, and lost a finger in the attack in Sheffield.

Mr Sumner will appear at Sheffield Magistrates' Court later. He was remanded in custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on 13 May.
The officer remains in hospital after undergoing surgery. PC Bates was attacked as she responded to reports of a domestic incident in Plowright Close, Gleadless Valley, on Wednesday with a male officer, who was also injured.
Eyewitness Simon Ellis said: "I went to the aid of the police officer. I dragged her by her stab vest. She had got a badly smashed ankle and severe head injuries." Three other officers also suffered injuries.
South Yorkshire Police said Mr Sumner was also charged with six counts of assault by beating, two counts of making threats to kill, affray, threatening a person with a blade in a public place and production of cannabis. PC Bates remains in hospital, South Yorkshire Police said.
