Two killed in M5 crash in Gloucestershire M5 crash: Two die on motorway in Gloucestershire
(about 3 hours later)
Two people died and a third person was seriously hurt in an accident involving at least four vehicles on the M5. Two men have died and a third has been seriously injured in a crash involving several vehicles on the M5.
It happened at about 01:00 BST between junction 8 southbound for the M50 and junction 9 for Tewkesbury. At least four vehicles were involved in the collision which happened at 01:00 BST between J8 and J9 southbound, Gloucestershire Police said.
Police and paramedics attended. Two people were pronounced dead at the scene. The road has been shut southbound between the two junctions on the Gloucestershire-Worcestershire border.
The M5 is closed between J8 and J9 southbound, and officers are advising motorists to avoid the area. A diversion is in place to exit the M5 at Junction 8 for the M50. Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.
A diversion has been put in place to exit the M5 at Junction 8 and follow signs via the A417 and A40. As well as the three men involved, five others needed medical treatment from the West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS).
Police had earlier said that three people were dead, but later corrected this information. Three ambulances, paramedics and two doctors were sent to the crash site by two different ambulance services.
"Upon arrival, the emergency services found a car which had been involved in a serious collision with four men inside," said a WMAS spokeswoman.
"Sadly, nothing could be done to save two men and they were confirmed dead on scene."
"A third man was in a critical condition and received advanced trauma care by ambulance staff and the trauma doctor at the roadside before being alerted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
"Four other patients from other vehicles involved in the collision were assessed and treated by South Western Ambulance Service colleagues.
"The motorway remains closed and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes."
