Witnesses said the man was shot three or four times in an alleyway in Newtown before he climbed over a wall and into a garden. West Midlands Police said they had deployed armed officers to patrol Birmingham's streets.

Derrick Campbell, the Home Office's advisor on guns, gangs and young people, who lives in Birmingham, said more had to be done to counter violence in the city.
He said: "What we are seeing is almost epidemic proportions of murders of young people.
"We are very, very worried. We're very concerned and questions have to be asked of the authorities."
He added: "We're calling on the police to take more action to ensure that the public are protected."
