House siege questioning continues
(about 22 hours later) | |
A 34-year-old man is still being questioned over a 36-hour armed siege at a house in Greater Manchester.
The stand-off started on Friday after police were told that a man who was possibly armed was holding a hostage.
Officers entered the house in Hereford Road in Hindley, Wigan, early on Sunday morning and used a Taser gun to arrest a man who was in the loft.
A 31-year-old man, who was arrested but later released without charge, is being treated as a witness and victim.
Police said the man in custody was being questioned on suspicion of possessing a firearm.
Speaking after the situation was brought under control, Supt Peter Matthews said officers acted after receiving information that a man inside the property had a firearm and a container of petrol.
Negotiators were called in but a decision was made to enter the property by force after they failed to make contact for several hours.
Mr Matthews added: "I am pleased this has been resolved without injury and I want to praise the efforts of all the officers and partner agencies involved.
"I would also like to thank the local residents for their support and co-operation." |
