A newborn boy has been found left at an Islamic centre in Staffordshire, police said. A newborn boy left at an Islamic centre in Staffordshire has died.

Earlier Staffordshire Police said a body had been found, although it is now believed the baby boy is receiving treatment at a hospital in Stafford. He was taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire where he was declared dead at 1230 GMT, Staffordshire Police said.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: "[We] were contacted by members of The Islamic Centre in Beresford Street in Stoke-on-Trent who had discovered a package outside the centre which they suspected contained a baby.
"Police attended and discovered a very young, baby boy who was conveyed to University Hospital of North Staffordshire for treatment.
"Sadly at 1230 [GMT], despite the efforts of the medical team, the baby died."
Police are appealing for the mother to come forward as she may be in need of urgent medical treatment.
