Currently, single people, married couples and cohabiting couples can all adopt.
Same sex couples can adopt in England, Wales and Scotland, but not in Northern Ireland.
Adopters in England and Wales must be aged over 21 (18 if one of a couple is the birth parent). There is no upper age limit, but the placing authority must be confident anyone adopting a child will have the energy required and be in good enough health to offer a stable home.
Likewise, if they can prove they have the energy, people will not be disqualified for being disabled, overweight or having a medical condition.
People must also show that the can financially support a child.
A criminal record will not automatically prevent someone from adopting unless they, or someone in their household, has been convicted or cautioned for offences against a child.

There are many mixed race children in all our citys today,But some couples should understand its not easy for some children, to mix with others, in schools. Due to the fact that ethnic groups tend to stick together.

  • Re comment no 4. Surely a child born in Britain wouldn't have any 'heritage' apart from a British one. Whether the parents are white British, Black British, Black African, Black Caribbean, Pink and gay it doesn't matter one bit so long as they are going to love that child irrespective of the tone of their skin. I can't believe we are still having this debate in 2011.

  • RACIAL PROFILINGA mixed-race adoption policy could make life difficult for Police future Racial Profiling and community cohesion. Is it not true that children should grow up with behaviour that fits their Racial Profile?INCITING RACIAL HATREDOur research has led us to suspect that confusion about Racial Citizenship and poorly managed Race Equality Schemes incites Racial Hatred.

  • About time too. As an adopted child I think more thought should be given to matching according to genetically carried personality and other traits. OK - difficult area, but as a child who was adopted to a football fanatic father who didn't understand a son who was not physical, but musical, craft instincts and love of history etc ... with those traits found eventually in my natural father ....!

  • A very sensible move. It shouldn't matter what you look like, but your ability to care for a child that should determine suitability to adopt.

  • Presumably this means that non-ethnic minority children can and will be adopted by ethnic minority families. Hopefully, this process will be monitored to ensure that racism is not affecting the equal opportunity to adopt when all the proper criteria have been met.
