#39, calm down dear, before you explode in a supernova of self righteousness. Of course the playing field is open to all. Some just dont want to play. The reasoning behind the wording of the article is simple. Not enough "non-white" couples are there to cover the supply of "non-white" kids up for adoption. Why? Answer. Way too un-pc to say here. As a retired social worker and an adoptive mother of two mixed-race babies (now 30+), the problem has not been with a lack of willing white adopters, but with adoption agencies reluctance for 30 years to consider white adopters for ethnic minority children. Agencies adopted Children's Act guidance to give "due consideration to racial origin" so that racial matching became the main consideration.

  • "White couples should be allowed to adopt black and ethnic minority children under new guidelines for social workers in England."I can see why some people are saying this article comes across as "rascist".Besides what others have stated... what are "...black and ethnic minority children..."?! Are other raced children unmentionable... that's why they're categorised as "ethnic minority"! White couples adopting children from ethnic groups cannot be good for the children, because the child will not learn about its own culture and their religion. What happens when he or she is an adult and want to join in with their own ethnic grouping. The same would apply for a white child being adopted by ethnic groups.

  • "Adopters in England and Wales must be aged over 21 (18 if one of a couple is the birth parent)."...Someone, please define the word "adoption"! If, "one of a couple is the birth parent"... surely, that is not adoption. Who ever write these policies need to rethink, rewrite... and hire a proofreader! about time i say i am black 38 years old happy and have a loving, caring and supporting adopted family and yes they are white, as far as i can see childern need love and a family envorionment to grow up in.Its not about wealth, but about giving a child and family a new and better life for all parties. cut the red tape and start careing for childern not messing with thier lives.....

  • I agree with the comments about this having a racist bias in the way that it talks about white couples and mixed race children (and not the other way round). I do understand that there are more available "white" couples than there are "ethic minotity" couples. I was watching a dual-heritage commentator today on the BBC who said that there were inherent problems in settling mixed heritage children, whom he said were the biggest constituency of unplaced children, with white families with no race issues! As an Anglo Indian I find that wholly confusing. Surely as much of their heritage lies with the white Caucasian culture as with their 'coloured' heritage?

How is this article racist? The whole adoption process should be 'colour-blind', ignoring the ethnic background of potential guardians. I find it appalling and dangerous that anyone can label a young child as already possessing a ‘racial’ identity, a child is a child for crying out loud! The only concern of the adoption agencies should be the placing of children with caring guardians.
