One report described six helicopters at the scene near the westbound carriageway near junction 32 for the Xscape leisure complex near Castleford. West Yorkshire Police said the 19 people were in a mini bus which was in collision with a lorry and a car.
Yorkshire Ambulance Service said it had put major incident procedures in place. The driver of the lorry has been arrested, police confirmed.
