(about 5 hours later)
Two people were found suffering from gunshot wounds in a vehicle in Springfield on Wednesday following a bizarre series of events, Fairfax County police said Thursday. Two people were found suffering from gunshot wounds in a vehicle that crashed into a police cruiser in Springfield on Wednesday night, following a bizarre series of events, Fairfax County police said.
The incident began shortly after 10 p.m. as officers were headed to a home in the 7500 block of Tralee Woods Court to serve an arrest warrant for reckless discharge of a firearm, police said. Before officers reached Tralee Woods Court, two vehicles approached a police cruiser a short distance away near the intersection of Creedmor Drive and Irishmore Court. One of the vehicles struck a police cruiser, police said. The incident began shortly after 10 p.m., as officers were staking out a home in the 7500 block of Tralee Woods Court, intending to serve an arrest warrant for reckless discharge of a firearm, police said. Officers saw three men enter the house, none of which was the wanted man, Rashad James. Later, officers said they heard a gunshot inside the home, police said.
A driver and a passenger in one of the vehicles were found to be suffering from non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and were transported to the hospital, police said. Three men then ran from the home and got into two cars and drove away, police said. The information was relayed to officers on nearby Creedmor Drive, who pulled out in their cruiser and attempted to stop a car coming down the road, police said. A second car then plowed into the police cruiser. Officers stopped both vehicles thinking they were both connected to the Tralee Woods Court address, but only one was.
Detectives are still investigating how the individuals were shot. The driver of the other vehicle was taken into custody. No officers were injured during the encounter. Police said the driver of the first vehicle refused police commands to get out of his car. After an hour of negotiations, the man was pepper-sprayed but still did not exit the car. Finally, after officers approached the car behind a ballistic shield, the man exited the vehicle, police said. After an investigation, officers determined the man was not associated with the Tralee Woods Court address officers were staking out and was released.
Police are still looking for the person who was the subject of the arrest warrant. The driver and the passenger of the car that hit the cruiser sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, police said.
Police also stopped a third vehicle, which actually contained the other man who had fled the Tralee Woods Court address.
An investigation later determined one of the men inside the Tralee Woods Court home had accidentally discharged a gun and the bullet struck one man in the hand and the second in the leg.
When all three men ran out of the home, they were intending to go to the hospital for treatment, police said.
