Iran has launched two retaliatory missile barrages against Israel in response to a series of strikes by the Jewish State on Iran on Friday. According to the Israeli Defense Forces, “fewer than 100 missiles” were fired, most of which were intercepted. On Friday morning, Israel launched strikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites, which it insisted were necessary to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The airstrikes were coordinated with targeted assassinations of senior Iranian military officials.
Earlier on Friday, the Israeli military struck Iran, claiming it was targeting both military and nuclear sites. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that a nuclear enrichment facility in Natanz was among the targets. Iran confirmed that the attacks killed Major General Hossein Salami, commander of the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and Major General Mohammad Bagheri, chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, along with several nuclear scientists.
Iran confirmed that the attacks killed Major General Hossein Salami, the commander of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and Major General Mohammad Bagheri, the chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces. Iran’s envoy to the UN, Amir-Saeid Iravani, stated that 78 people were killed and 320 others injured.
In addition, Israeli officials claim to have killed most of the leadership of the IRGC Air Force. Iranian media has acknowledged that the head of the IRGC Air Force, Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, was among the deceased. Tehran retaliated with dozens of ballistic missiles fired into Israel, at least some of which penetrated air defenses, according to videos circulating online.
Media reports claim as many as 78 people were killed, including senior military commanders and nuclear scientists, with another 329 wounded. US President Donald Trump said he had prior knowledge of the Israeli operation and called on Iran to conclude a new nuclear deal. Tehran, however, said Israel’s actions had closed the path to diplomacy and announced the suspension of nuclear talks with the US.
US President Donald Trump said he had prior knowledge of the strikes and expressed hope that Tehran will return to the negotiating table where the US hopes to strike a deal on nuclear enrichment. West Jerusalem declared that Tehran’s retaliation “crossed all red lines,” while subsequent reports from Iran suggested a new round of Israeli military action.
Iran vowed to retaliate, suggesting that the attack “cannot have been carried out without the coordination and authorization of the United States.”
The Israeli strikes come after five rounds of US-Iranian talks on Iran’s nuclear program failed to produce a breakthrough. The sixth round of negotiations was scheduled for Sunday in Oman.
