Netanyahu hasn’t ruled out killing Iran’s Supreme Leader: LIVE UPDATES Trump seeks ‘real end’ as Israel and Iran continue with strikes from the air: LIVE UPDATES
(about 20 hours later)
The Israeli Prime Minister has claimed taking out the Ayatollah Khamenei would end the conflict The US president says his goals go beyond achieving a truce between West Jerusalem and Tehran, as hostilities continue
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told ABC News that he doesn’t rule out killing Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. He made the comment on the fourth consecutive day of tit-for-tat hostilities between the two countries. As the conflict between Israel and Iran continues for the fifth day, US President Donald Trump stated that his goals extended beyond simply securing a ceasefire between the two nations.
When asked about reports that US President Donald Trump had rejected an Israeli plan to assassinate Khamenei, Netanyahu said, “It’s not going to escalate the conflict, it’s going to end the conflict.” When speaking to reporters after leaving the G7 summit early on Friday, Trump denied that he was leaving to work on a ceasefire, hinting that something “much bigger” is in the works.
His comment comes as West Jerusalem bombed the offices of Iranian state broadcaster IRIB in Tehran. The Iranian authorities has warned of retaliatory strikes on two Israeli channels the state-owned N12 and the privately-held right-wing N14. “I want a real end, with Iran giving up entirely on nuclear weapons,” Trump noted, while maintaining that Tehran was “very close” to obtaining a nuclear weapon.
At least 21 Israelis were killed in Iranian attacks; the Islamic Republic claims 224 of its people have been killed and that “over 90%” of them were civilians. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country’s missile attacks, dubbed Operation Rising Lion, have set back Iran’s nuclear program. West Jerusalem has reportedly targeted three key Iranian nuclear facilities Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow but the extent of the damage sustained by them remains unclear.
Several nations, including the US and Russia, have advised their citizens to evacuate Israel and Iran amid the escalation of hostilities. The Islamic Republic claims at least 224 of its people have been killed since hostilities began last Friday. In Israel, 24 people have been killed, according to West Jerusalem.
On Friday, Israeli jets bombed multiple targets across Iran, including a uranium enrichment center in Natanz, and carried out targeted assassinations of several senior military commanders and scientists. Iran retaliated by firing dozens of ballistic missiles into Israel. Russia condemned Israel’s initial airstrikes on Friday and called for de-escalation. President Vladimir Putin spoke with Trump by phone on Saturday, and the two agreed on the possibility of rebooting negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, according to Putin’s foreign policy aide, Yuri Ushakov.
