(about 8 hours later)
Tehran has reportedly announced that its new attacks will be “20 times larger than previous ones” Israel carried out large-scale strikes against Iran yesterday, prompting immediate retaliation from Tehran
Iran is preparing to launch some 2,000 missiles at Israel in upcoming strikes as a response to West Jerusalem’s earlier attacks on Tehran’s nuclear and military sites, Al Arabiya reported on Saturday. The Iranian military has announced that future attacks will be “20 times larger than previous ones,” according to the outlet. Israel dramatically escalated its attacks on Iran on Saturday, striking key oil and gas facilities including the massive South Pars gas field the world’s largest. The energy sector strikes came after a night of intense reciprocal attacks between the two nations.
On Friday, Iran confirmed that the Israeli attacks killed Major General Hossein Salami, commander of the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and Major General Mohammad Bagheri, chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, along with several nuclear scientists. The IDF hit multiple targets across Iran on Friday, including uranium enrichment sites, while also killing several senior military commanders and scientists in targeted assassinations. Iran retaliated by firing dozens of ballistic missiles into Israel.
Iran’s envoy to the UN, Amir-Saeid Iravani, stated that 78 people had been killed and 320 injured. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has “vowed to strike every target” necessary to eliminate the “threat” from Iran.
Tehran retaliated with dozens of ballistic missiles fired into Israel, at least some of which penetrated its air defenses, according to videos circulating online. Following the escalation, Oman has announced the cancellation of planned US-Iran nuclear talks.
US President Donald Trump said he had prior knowledge of the Israeli operation and called on Iran to conclude a new nuclear deal. Tehran, however, replied that Israel’s actions closed the path to diplomacy and announced the suspension of nuclear talks with the US. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump have discussed the crisis in a 50-minute phone call, during which they reportedly agreed on the possibility of restarting negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, according to Putin’s foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov.
West Jerusalem declared that Tehran’s retaliation “crossed all red lines,” while subsequent reports from Iran suggested a new round of Israeli military action.
